Vintage French “Incassable” (unbreakable) Pot with Lid
9 x 3.25”, 5” with lid
A charming mid-20th century French kitchen pot from Vallauris, glazed in a warm, buttery yellow with reddish-brown undertones peeking through along the rim and lid. The surface shows lovely natural variation from the firing process, with a softly dimpled sheen and a few intentional pinholes for steam release.
Stamped “Incassable Vallauris” on the base—literally “unbreakable Vallauris”—a postwar mark associated with sturdy, everyday stoneware produced in the southern French town of Vallauris. Nestled in the Alpes-Maritimes near Cannes, Vallauris has been a ceramics hub since Roman times, but it gained particular fame in the mid-20th century for its earthy utilitarian wares and bold artistic revival. After WWII, the town attracted artists, potters, and even Picasso, who helped renew interest in traditional pottery techniques.
This piece likely served a practical role in the kitchen, but today it’s just as at home styled on open shelving or used for dry storage. The simple form and muted glaze give it a soft presence—unassuming, but quietly full of character.
Light wear and small imperfections consistent with age and use.
