Vintage French Confit Pot, Ribbed Handle

A small salt-glazed stoneware pot with a single ribbed loop handle. The body is a warm tan that thins to pale buff toward the base, and the handle is glazed darker and glossier than the pot itself, with finger grooves running its length. Two incised lines circle the body below the shoulder. The rim is thick and rolled, glazed over, and the interior is lined in pale grey-cream with the throwing rings still visible. The base is unglazed, with faint incised marks near the edge that no longer read. There is chipping around the base edge in several places and one larger chip on the lower body. Wear consistent with age and use, sold as found.

Historical Context

Salt-glazed grès was the workhorse ceramic of the French kitchen, thrown in quantity by potteries in northern and eastern France and sold plain. The interior lining glaze is the functional part, it sealed the porous wall so the pot could hold fat, mustard, or preserves without absorbing them. Small pots like this one stayed on the table or the shelf rather than in the cellar.

Styling Ideas

Small enough for a bathroom counter or a desk, holding brushes or pens. On a kitchen shelf it reads as the small note among larger pots, and the ribbed handle ties it to bigger confit pots of the same tradition.
