Antique French Red Transfer Bird & Floral Compotier

Sale price$186.00

c.1890–1910

A beautiful French footed compote by Gien, produced in their finer Fainette body a higher end faïence line and decorated in a red transfer motif of delicate florals and perched birds. The gently flared bowl, slender pedestal, and botanical detailing across the entire form make this an especially elegant example of late 19th early 20th century Gien. Marked “Gien – Fainette – Médaille d’Or – Honneur” on the underside.

Measures 10 x 5.5”

In very good antique condition with expected craquelure throughout, light tonal staining within the crazing, and minor age related wear to the rim and foot. No cracks or structural issues.

Styling:

A versatile and sculptural piece lovely for fruit, pastries, or seasonal displays, and equally striking styled on open shelving or as part of a tabletop arrangement.

 Historical Notes:

Gien introduced Fainette as a fine faïence body during the late 19th century, used for their more refined tableware forms. Red transfer motifs with birds and botanical elements were especially popular during this era, reflecting both Romantic and Japonisme influences. Footed compotes were traditional multi-purpose serving pieces in French households, designed for both presentation and practicality.
