Antique Gien Red Transfer Oval Serving Platter (Fainette Body)

c.1890–1910

Measures 14 5/8” x 10 1/4”

A beautiful French oval serving platter by Gien, produced in their finer Fainette body—a higher-end faïence line—and decorated in a red transfer motif of perched birds and delicate florals. The generous oval form and botanical detailing make this a classic example of Gien’s late 19th–early 20th century tableware. Marked “Gien – Fainette – Médailles d’Or – Diplômes d’Honneur” on the underside.

In very good antique condition with expected craquelure, light staining and utensil wear from age, and minor rim wear to the red transfer. No cracks or structural issues.

A lovely piece for serving, layering on open shelving, or anchoring a holiday table. The red transfer pattern also pairs beautifully with other Gien pieces from the same era.

Historical Notes:

Gien introduced Fainette as a fine faïence body during the late 19th century, used for their more refined and decorative forms. Red transfer motifs with birds and botanical elements were especially popular at the time, drawing from Romantic and Japonisme influences. Oval platters like this were traditional staples in French households for presenting roasts, vegetables, and seasonal dishes.
