Miniature Tramp Art Chest with Cigar Box Origins

Dimensions: 8” H x 9” W x 6” D

This miniature three-drawer chest is a striking example of tramp art, a folk art tradition characterized by layered geometric carving—often made by hand from discarded materials like cigar boxes. The notched carving throughout and stepped frame design reflect the care and ingenuity of its maker. On close inspection, the drawer bottoms reveal branding from old cigar boxes (including “E.G.” and a partially legible “Little Pete”), grounding its origin firmly in late 19th- to early 20th-century America.

Details to note:

  • Handmade tramp art piece with deeply notched carving on all visible surfaces
  • Constructed from repurposed cigar boxes, visible on the drawer interiors and reverse
  • Graphic branding still legible inside drawers, a wonderful testament to its resourceful origins
  • Back legs are broken, causing the chest to rest at a slight backward angle
  • Most of the original pull knobs are missing—one remains, offering a glimpse into the original design
  • Patina and wear consistent with age, contributing to its authentic appeal

Styling tip:

Perfect as a curiosity piece in a study, atop a bookshelf, or nestled within a larger collection of folk or outsider art. The small scale also makes it ideal for storing jewelry, desk supplies, or even matches and candles.

Note: Priced at $198 to reflect the condition and offer an accessible opportunity to own a genuine piece of American tramp art—something often out of reach at this size and quality.
