19th century Pearlware Strawberry Pattern Bowl
19th-Century Staffordshire Pearlware Bowl with Hand-Painted Strawberry Motif
5.75" x 1.25"
This small pearlware bowl, dating to the mid–19th century, features a hand-painted strawberry border in vibrant polychrome enamels of red, green, and purple. The strawberries and leafy sprays are arranged in rhythmic repetition, a popular Staffordshire motif that reflects the era’s fascination with naturalistic decoration. The bluish-white glaze characteristic of pearlware gives the bowl a distinct luminosity, contrasting with the rich enamel tones.
Unlike lusterware, which uses metallic washes to create iridescence, this example is decorated in opaque hand-painted enamels, making it part of the broad family of Staffordshire tablewares designed for both everyday use and export. Its charming strawberry design links it to the broader "Gaudy Welsh" and regional border wares that were beloved for their cheerful, folkloric character.
Styling: Perfect as a small dish for fruit, nuts, or sweets, or simply as a display piece in a kitchen or dining room. Its scale also makes it ideal for layering into an open shelf vignette with other English or French ceramics.
Condition: Craquelure and light discoloration consistent with age; no repairs noted.
