A finely woven French-style tapestry, likely French and produced circa 1920s–1950s, in the tradition of the famed Aubusson workshops. Inspired by 18th-century Rococo pastoral scenes, it features a romantic countryside composition: a shepherd standing among sheep in conversation with a seated woman, surrounded by stylized flora and oversized trees. The floral border adds decorative symmetry, echoing motifs from earlier Louis XV–era designs.
Though Jacquard-woven, the piece shows signs of hand-finishing on the reverse, including subtle thread irregularities and color transitions—distinguishing it from later mass-produced Belgian reproductions. The background includes an unusual branch-patterned sky, a decorative innovation that adds artistic distinction and quiet visual movement. This motif nods to Verdure landscapes while softening the transition between figure and ground.
The tapestry comes with its original decorative rod, complete with painted fleur-de-lis finials and stamped with the number 1188—a format associated with early 20th-century French display hardware. The piece is unlined, allowing the craftsmanship and threadwork to remain visible on the reverse.
Ideal for adding texture, warmth, and historical charm to an interior.
Details & Craftsmanship
This Jacquard-woven wool tapestry features visible hand-finishing on the reverse, with threadwork and subtle irregularities that distinguish it from later commercial reproductions. It is unlined and unbacked, allowing the structure and craftsmanship to remain exposed—an indication of earlier production practices. The piece is mounted on its original painted iron and wood rod, complete with fleur-de-lis finials and brass hanging loops. The muted, painterly palette—dusty reds, golds, greens, and browns—lends warmth and softness to the overall composition. Likely woven in France or for the French market, it reflects the traditions of Aubusson craftsmanship.
Style Notes
This piece adds quiet grandeur and textural richness to a room. Its scale makes it ideal above a console, daybed, or writing desk, where it can serve as a soft focal point. The warm palette integrates effortlessly into neutral interiors and can soften more structured spaces with its pastoral charm. Pair with rustic wood, natural textiles, or antique books for a layered, collected look. Equally at home in a library, bedroom, or salon-style living room.
Condition
Very good vintage condition, consistent with age and use. Minor irregularities in weave and softening of the wool are appropriate for a textile of this period and contribute to its character. The tapestry is structurally sound and unbacked, preserving its original state. Ready to hang with original rod and hardware.
