Ornament C: escutcheon with jacquard ribbon
2 1/2” x 1 3/8”
(two available)
An antique French keyhole escutcheon (entrée de serrure) paired with an antique ribbon. Each ornament is one-of-a-kind, with its original warm brass/bronze patina and a length of antique ribbon. Lovely age, light surface wear, and small irregularities consistent with authentic use.
Hang on a cabinet knob or armoire key, add to a wreath or stocking, tie around a bottle as a host gift, layer on a lamp switch, use as a book ribbon/decoration, or style on a wall hook for a subtle glint of French hardware. They’re beautiful grouped or mixed into garlands with other found pieces.
French escutcheons like these were made for 19th–early 20th-century furniture and doors, protecting the wood around the keyhole while adding ornament. Motifs range from Rococo scrolls and beading to laurel wreaths and classical foliage, reflecting popular styles from Louis-Philippe through the Belle Époque. Pairing them with antique ribbon (ruban ancien) keeps the materials period-appropriate and lets the metal’s old patina shine.
