Gilded Wood Finial (c. 1910–1930) - green ribbon
An antique carved wood finial with its original gilded finish, early 20th century. Antique ribbon added. Hand-carved in the classic French pomme de pin (pinecone) form and mounted on a turned base. The gilding shows beautiful, authentic wear with areas of bole (the pink clay beneath the gold) softly exposed. Each finial is slightly different, reflecting the individual handwork of the original artisan.
Measures 5"x3"
Styling
A perfect small sculptural object for shelves, mantels, or consoles. These finials add architectural character and work beautifully grouped with books, frames, or other antique accents.
Historical Notes
Finials of this type originally capped curtain rods, bedposts, or small architectural elements in French interiors from the early 1900s. They were carved in small workshops and finished with water gilding—a process appreciated today for the rich depth it acquires with time. Individual antique finials with original gilding are highly collectible.
Condition
Wear consistent with age: warm patina, small nicks, and natural losses to the gilding. Solid and stable.
