Large Saint-Amand Transferware Platter, Régence Pattern

Sale price$168.00

Period: Early 20th century

Size: 17 x 12.5 inches

A large oval serving platter in French terre de fer from Saint-Amand et Hamage, in the Régence pattern. What sets it apart from most transferware is the molding. The blank is shaped in relief, with a scalloped, shell-fluted rim, and the soft blue transfer of trailing flowers, rococo scrollwork, and dotted garlands is printed over that raised surface rather than on a flat plate. The body carries an allover crazing that reads as quiet age, with a few faint marks in the well that are characteristic of the ware. A generous size, made to carry a roast or a full course to the table.

Historical Context

Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, in the Nord, was one of the great French ceramic centers, and the Saint-Amand et Hamage works produced transfer-printed terre de fer for the everyday French table. Transfer printing let the factory lay a finely detailed pattern onto a durable fine earthenware body, which is how patterns like Régence reached households across France. These are the serving pieces of the turn-of-the-century French kitchen, and the soft blue color has made them quietly collected for French country and cottage interiors.

Styling Ideas

Lean it on a shelf or plate rail to show the scalloped rim and the trailing floral print. Group it with other blue transferware or mix it against white ironstone for contrast. Use it for serving as intended, or set it on a console with fruit or bread.
