French Ironstone Soupière, Choisy-le-Roi, Hautin-Boulenger & Compagnie, Late 19th Century

Sale price$136.00

A classic white ironstone footed bowl with molded fruit-and-foliage relief handles, made by Hautin-Boulenger & Compagnie at the Choisy-le-Roi pottery in the late 1800s. The factory mark on the base reads "Terre de Fer," the trade name for the hard white ironstone-type earthenware that Choisy-le-Roi perfected, a blend of feldspar and kaolin that made pieces whiter and more durable than standard earthenware. Choisy-le-Roi, Hautin-Boulenger, and the HB & Cie mark all refer to the same maker and location; the pottery was managed by Hippolyte Boulenger from 1863 onward and became one of France's finest ceramics houses.

The bowl bears the honest patina of age: beautiful rust-colored staining throughout the interior, fine crazing, and stable hairlines consistent with 150 years of use. The naturalistic handles and pedestal base make it perfect for display.

Condition: Stable hairlines; interior age spotting and crazing; wear consistent with age and use.

Styling: Plant bulb plants as a beautiful summer centerpiece; fresh or dried florals; fruit bowl; collector's display.

Dimensions: Opening 7 inches; 9½ inches across the handles; height 5½ inches.
