Antique French majolica plate B - imperfect
FRENCH MAJOLICA PLATES WITH BERRIES & BLOOMS, sold individually
Orchies, France, c. 1880–1920
Dimensions: 8.5"
A beautifully modeled pair of majolica plates by Orchies, identifiable by the windmill mark impressed on the reverse. Orchies was one of the major northern French faience and majolica producers of the late 19th century, known for richly colored botanical motifs and deeply molded relief work.
These plates feature layered leaves and clusters of cherries surrounding a central stylized blossom. The palette—emerald, chestnut, charcoal, and rose—is characteristic of Orchies’ naturalistic majolica, where translucent glazes pool into the recesses of the relief to create tonal variation and depth.
Plates in this pattern were often made as part of dessert or fruit services, valued equally for their decorative presence and technical craftsmanship.
Condition:
Good antique condition with expected glaze variations and minor firing irregularities inherent to 19th-century majolica. see photos for small chip
