Creil et Montereau Octagonal Platter, Perles Model

Sale price$300.00

Period: 19th century, around 1830

Size: 16.25 x 13 inches

A large octagonal serving platter in French faïence fine from Creil et Montereau, in the "Perles" model named for the row of raised beads framing the rim. The body is a warm ivory white with a deep oval well sunk into the center, made to carry a roast or a generous serving dish to the table. The surface has a soft allover crazing that reads as quiet age rather than damage, and the heavy, substantial weight is the kind you only feel in a real period piece. Marked Montereau on the reverse.

Historical Context

Creil et Montereau was the leading French maker of faïence fine, the fine cream-bodied earthenware that France produced to rival English creamware and ironstone. The Perles model, with its faceted octagonal form and beaded edge, is a neoclassical design dating to around 1830 that has stayed desirable for nearly two centuries. A full Perles service is a significant set, which makes a single large serving platter one of the harder pieces to find on its own. The plats were made in far smaller numbers than the plates.

Styling Ideas

Lean it upright to let the beaded edge frame it like an object. Group it with other white faïence fine for a quiet collected look. Use it for a roast or vegetables as intended, or fill it with fruit, bread, or a cluster of candles as a centerpiece. It also works flat on a console as a catchall for keys and mail.
