19th-Century French Marquetry Box with Brass Inlay and Ormolu Mounts

 Dimensions: 8.5" x 11.75"

France, c. 1850–1870

A refined French marquetry box from the mid-19th century, crafted in ebonized wood and inlaid throughout with brass in a delicate repeating floral pattern. The framed cartouches and stylized motifs reflect the period’s interest in boulle-inspired decoration, interpreted here at an intimate scale with exceptional precision.

The serpentine form is elevated by cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts along the base and lid, as well as small ormolu feet. The box retains its original working key—an uncommon and desirable survival. The interior remains in its original dark finish.

Wear to the ebonized surface, light rubbing to the ormolu, and expected age-related marks contribute to the authentic 19th-century character of the piece.

A sophisticated decorative object, emblematic of the quiet luxury and craftsmanship of the Napoleon III era.

Condition

Exceptional exterior condition with crisp brass marquetry and intact ormolu mounts. The box presents beautifully. There is a subtle separation at the front closure when the lid is at rest — a common age-related movement in 19th-century veneered boxes.

It does not affect function: the box opens and locks securely, and the gap is clearly shown in the photographs. Original key included.

Interior lining no longer present.
