Belle Époque Fabric-Covered Keepsake Box with Portrait Lid
Belle Époque Fabric-Covered Keepsake Box with Portrait Lid
c. 1900–1920
5.5” H x 11.5” W x 3.5” D
This early 20th-century French keepsake box is covered in a richly patterned floral fabric and features an oval canvas portrait at the center of the lid. The portrait, likely inspired by popular fashion illustrations of the Belle Époque, depicts a young woman in a wide-brimmed hat trimmed in soft pastels, framed with decorative woven trim.
The box is constructed of cardboard with a paper-lined interior and hinged lid. While originally intended for vanity items, gloves, or correspondence, it now makes a charming storage piece for photos, letters, or small collectibles.
Condition Notes:
This piece shows wear consistent with age, including a tear to the upper side near the edge of the lid. Additional age-related wear includes minor scuffing to the base, spotting to the interior paper lining, and slight loosening of the inner lid panel. Structurally sound overall and still closes securely. See photos.
Styling Notes:
Perfect layered into a romantic vignette—on a bookshelf, vanity, or nightstand—or stacked with other textile-covered boxes. A sweet accent in a feminine office or bedroom, especially when paired with vintage perfume bottles, ribbons, or handwritten letters.
