Antique Pair of Small French Oil Paintings, River and Forest Scenes, late 19th c.
A pair of small French oil paintings on panel in the late nineteenth-century landscape tradition. The first depicts two lavandières kneeling at the edge of a river beneath a canopy of autumn trees, their white linens catching the cool light off the water. The second is a forest interior, a path winding between tall trunks under a soft canopy, the light filtered through dense foliage. Both panels are atmospheric and painterly in the tradition of the Barbizon school and its many provincial inheritors.
Presented in matching carved giltwood frames of the period, decorated with stylized wave motifs along the inner edge. The pair reads beautifully as a small diptych, anchoring a French country wall arrangement or hung above a small console.
Dimensions: 7½ × 9¾ in. each.
