Antique Ink Landscape with Windmill, Framed

~13.5 x 8.75”

A finely rendered antique landscape drawing in black ink, featuring a windmill, a distant church spire, and bare winter trees along the riverbank. Birds fill the sky, and a lone figure walks in the distance, adding scale and quiet narrative to the scene. The elongated composition and crisp ink work give the piece a sense of stillness. The frame is original and contain original wavy glass. Frame wear consistent with age.

The drawing is signed P. Lopin and mounted behind glass in its original giltwood frame, which shows beautiful surface wear and layered patina. The mat is edged with a hand-painted gold line—an elegant detail that subtly highlights the composition. The back bears the label of P. Schlumberger Père & Fils, a respected 19th-century framing and gilding atelier in Belfort, known for its finely crafted presentation. While the artist, P. Lopin, isn’t widely recorded, the clarity and delicacy of the linework suggest a trained hand—likely a regional draftsman or illustrator working in late 19th-century France. Given the framing atelier’s location and the architectural details, the scene was likely drawn in northeastern France, perhaps in the region surrounding Belfort.

Subtle aging to the paper and mat, including foxing and toning, add to its charm without distracting from the delicacy of the drawing. A beautiful example of traditional European draftsmanship, perfect for layering into a gallery wall or displaying on a shelf or easel.
