Antique French Yellow Ware Lidded Tureen, 19th c.
A small French yellow ware lidded tureen with twin scrolled handles and a flower-form finial on the domed cover. Fiding an antique piece with a mathcin lid is always an excited find. The body and lid are decorated with restrained brown banding around the warm honey-yellow ground, in the tradition of nineteenth-century French country faïence jaune (yellow) produced at Sarreguemines and other Lorraine and Alsatian potteries. The form descends from the eighteenth-century petit potager used on French country tables for stews, compotes, and preserves.
Sttling notes: Exactly the kind of small footed tureen that anchors a styled French country shelf or shows beautifully on an open dresser with linen and brass. The honey tone reads warmly against blue and white, ironstone, or alongside other yellow ware.
Condition: Brown speckling throughout the body and especislly the interior consistent with period French yellow ware (a matter of charm in country pieces of this age). A chip and loss to the lid and finial, and minor glaze wear to the rim and foot. Honest age, no restoration.
Dimensions: 5½ × 6 in.
