Graphite, charcoal and white chalk on toned paper, a head and shoulders study of a young woman.

The sitter is turned in three quarter profile with her gaze lifted and one closed hand raised beneath her chin. Her hair is parted at the center, drawn smooth over the ears and gathered into a low chignon at the nape. She wears a loose wrap falling open across the shoulder over a full sleeve gathered at the wrist. Graphite carries the fine linear work through the hair and the edges of the fingers, charcoal builds the shadowed side of the face and the ground, and white chalk lays the light across the drapery. The hands are rendered with the knuckles and the finger overlap correctly observed. The drawing keeps its original mat. The oval frame is carved wood in a warm honey tone with rosebuds and leaves carved in a naturalistic arrangement, crisp and well defined. Frame and drawing were sourced separately and paired, then professionally framed with archival materials behind 99% UV glass.

Historical Context
Drawing on toned paper in charcoal with white heightening was the standard method of the French academic studios, where students spent years on the drawn head. The colored ground supplies the middle value, so the draftsman works in two directions at once, down into shadow and up into light. The pensive pose, hand raised to the chin and gaze carried off to the side, was a studio convention of the period, and the quality of the drawing places it as academic work rather than a family likeness.
