Antique French Painter's Brush, Copper Ferrule, 19th Century (Large)
An antique round painter's brush, the European decorator's tool that predates the flat ferrule brush. The round head is bound into a domed copper ferrule, which held far more paint than a flat brush and was used for limewash, distemper, and oil paint across broad surfaces and into moldings and carved detail. The long turned wooden handle gave reach and control.
The ferrule is copper, chosen because it resists the rust an iron ferrule would bleed into water-based paint and limewash. The green is verdigris, the patina copper develops as it oxidizes, and on a brush it is direct evidence of genuine age and real use. The paint spatter on the handle is part of the working history, not a flaw. This is the larger of a matched pair, also available separately.
Measures 18 inches long.
Styling: stand it in a crock or jar on a shelf or worktable, group it with other studio tools, or lay it flat in a vignette as a sculptural object.
