Antique French Miniature Marquetry Wardrobe with Marble Top

A miniature wardrobe in mahogany with a mirrored door over a single drawer, topped with white Carrara-style marble. The case is bordered throughout in double boxwood stringing, two fine parallel lines of light inlay framing the door, the drawer, and the edges of the case. The mirror is beveled and set in a stepped wood frame. Turned-wood knobs on the door and drawer. A carved rope-twist molding runs around the base, which rests on small turned bun feet.

The wardrobe, or armoire, was an essential piece of bedroom furniture in 19th-century France, and miniature versions were made for display and personal use. The double stringing and beveled mirror lift even a small piece to something refined, and the marble top adds both elegance and practicality.

Condition: The marble is in lovely condition with one small flea bite. The mirror shows soft foxing with a touch of loss at one corner. Minor veneer cracks and a small chip to the top edge, consistent with age.

Styling: Display it as functional storage for jewelry and small keepsakes behind the mirrored door. Leave the door slightly ajar to show the inlay and catch the light, or use the marble top as the base for a small vignette with a single precious object, a string of pearls, or a few intaglios.
