Antique French Miniature Mahogany Commode with Dark Marble Top, Napoléon III
A miniature commode in mahogany in the Louis-Philippe style, typical of the Napoléon III period. Three drawers in bookmatched flame veneer sit beneath a dark, figured marble top with white veining and a pebbled, brecciated pattern, in excellent condition. Brass rosette knobs on the drawers. The piece sits on a solid wood plinth base.
The Louis-Philippe style emerged in early 19th-century France as a restrained aesthetic, favoring clean lines and quality woods over ornament. It remained popular through the Napoléon III period, when makers produced miniature versions for display and domestic use. The dark marble top was both practical and elegant, protecting the wood surface while adding visual weight.
Condition: Honest old veneer shrinkage cracks, including one running down a side panel, with some edge chipping, old filler, and a few small holes. The marble is perfect. The piece retains old paper collection inventory labels.
Styling: Display it as functional storage for jewelry and small accessories. Leave one of the drawers ajar with a beautiful scarf dangling. The dark marble top looks beautiful as a base for a vignette, with trinkets displayed such as intaglios or shells.
Dimensions: 11½ inches wide, 7½ inches deep, 8¾ inches high.
