Antique French Miniature Ebonized Cabinet (Chevet), Napoléon III

Sale price$298.00

A miniature bedside cabinet, or chevet, in warm mahogany framed with blackened ebonized banding, a small drawer set over a paneled door. Turned-wood knobs on both the drawer and the door. The two-tone contrast of red-brown wood against the black fillet is pure Napoléon III taste, and the piece rests on little turned bun feet.

The ebonized fillet, a band of blackened wood, was a hallmark of Napoléon III furniture, prized for its graphic contrast against warm timber. Miniature pieces like this were made in the second half of the 19th century for display and personal use.

Condition: Honest rubbing and some loss to the ebonized banding, general age wear, and a few small holes. One knob is loose.

Styling: Use it as a little catchall for rings, cufflinks, and small treasures, or as a display piece styled with mini books and curiosities.

Dimensions: 8¼ inches high, 4¾ inches wide, 3¼ inches deep.
