Antique French Medical Books, Médecine Domestique, 1802 (Set of Three)
Three volumes of Buchan's Médecine Domestique, ou Traité Complet des moyens de se conserver en santé, translated by Jean-Denis Duplanil and published in Paris by Moutardier in 1802. Original orange paper wrappers (broché binding) with exposed hand-sewn spines, printed spine labels, and deckled rag-paper pages. Genuinely antique at over 200 years old, with the soft worn patina and faded orange color collectors and stylists love.
The set carries real historical weight. William Buchan's Domestic Medicine, first published in 1769, was one of the most influential medical books ever written, with the radical aim of "laying medicine more open to mankind." It put practical guidance on prevention, diet, hygiene, and simple remedies into the hands of ordinary households rather than physicians alone, and went on to sell tens of thousands of copies across nineteen editions and nearly every major European language. This is the celebrated French edition, translated and considerably expanded by Dr. Jean-Denis Duplanil, physician to the Count of Artois, for French readers.
