Antique French Labeled Towel Rack, Early 20th Century
Period
Early 20th century, French
Size
11½ inches wide
A French wall-mounted towel rack in warm honey-toned wood with four wire hooks. Each hook carries a small black enameled plaque lettered in gilt: mains, verres, assiettes, couverts. Hands, glasses, plates, cutlery. The back keeps its original keyhole bracket for hanging.
Historical Context
A well-run French kitchen kept a separate drying cloth for each task, a lint-free one for glasses, others for plates, cutlery, and hands, so that no cloth crossed jobs. A labeled rack like this one held each torchon to its purpose. The French name is a porte-torchons.
Styling Ideas
Hang it in a kitchen, bath, or pantry for tea towels or hand towels, or use it as it was meant to be used.
