Antique French Ironstone Footed Compote | Longchamp, Belleville, c. 1880–1910

Compotier — Longchamp

9.5" diameter

A dessert plate — compotier — by Longchamp, Belleville, marked on the base and dating to approximately 1880–1910. The transfer-printed teal neoclassical border alternates laurel garland and ribbon-tied bow motifs against a cream-white ground — the vocabulary of French neoclassicism rendered in the precise, graphic language of late 19th century transferware. Longchamp produced some of the most refined French ironstone of the period, and this piece is representative of their best work: the weight and ring of the terre de fer body, the crispness of the print, the footed form that gives even a simple plate architectural presence.

Stack with other French transferware, display on a plate stand, or use at the table. The teal border pairs with blue, green, cream, and natural linens. A single piece makes a strong statement; a collection is transformative.
