Antique French Faux-Bamboo Mirror with Original Chain, late 19th c.

A French faux-bamboo mirror in turned fruitwood, the corners crossed with carved bamboo-form finials, retaining its original hanging chain. In the  japonisant tradition, when French cabinetmakers turned native woods to imitate Japanese bamboo and produced a parallel furniture vocabulary in the taste of the Far East from the 1860s through the early 1900s.

The mirror plate is original and has soft silvering loss and atmospheric oxidation. A true patina from the mercury glass. The chain reads as a period detail and is original to the piece.
