Antique French Faux-Bamboo Mirror, late 19th c.

Sale price$198.00

A French faux-bamboo mirror in turned fruitwood, the corners crossed and finished with carved bamboo-form finials, in the japonisant taste of the French Aesthetic Movement. The decorative faux-bamboo tradition flourished in France from the 1860s through the early 1900s, when cabinetmakers turned native woods to imitate the bamboo arriving from Japan and produced a parallel furniture vocabulary in the taste of the Far East.

The original mirror plate has the soft, atmospheric quality of antique glass, with appropriate silvering losses and oxidation that give the reflection depth.
