Antique French Faux-Bamboo Miniature Armoire, Belle Époque
A miniature two-door armoire in the faux-bamboo style, one door fitted with a mirror and the other a blind paneled door, crowned with a peaked pediment and a turned finial set in a pierced roundel. Small metal drop pulls hang on the doors, a single drawer sits at the base, and the piece rides on turned bamboo feet. The frame is turned and stained beech worked to imitate bamboo, scorched at the nodes, over a pitchpin case. Inside, the cabinet keeps its original papered walls in a floral and gingham pattern.
Faux-bamboo furniture became fashionable in Europe during the mid-to-late 19th century, influenced by Japanese design that entered Western taste after Japan opened to trade in the 1850s. Bamboo's slender, segmented form appealed to makers seeking elegant, economical construction. Department stores and mail-order catalogs brought these pieces to middle-class homes in miniature form.

Styling: Use it as functional storage for jewelry and small accessories, for both men and women. Or use it as a display piece, leaving one or both doors open and styling with mini books and other small trinkets to create a curated vignette.
