Antique French Brown-Glazed Stoneware Confit Pot with Loop Handle, 19th Century

A brown-glazed stoneware pot with a single loop handle and a full, rounded body. The glaze covers the interior and runs down the shoulder and body in a deep chestnut brown, stopping just short of the very top of the rim and again above the foot, where the raw clay stays exposed. Two incised rings circle the shoulder near the top, with a single ring set slightly below them. The pot sits on a small defined foot. Pots like this held meat preserved under its own fat, and the glazed interior is what made that possible, it sealed the porous stoneware so the fat could not soak into the wall.

Measures 5.75 inches tall and 7 inches wide, with a 4 inch mouth opening.
