Antique French Brass Inlay Tea Caddy with Original Key

Sale price$295.00

Antique French tea caddy made in France circa 1820–1830.

approx. 9.5 x 5 x 4.5”

Finely crafted from dark-stained hardwood, likely rosewood or mahogany with intricate brass and bone inlay. The lid bears the word “Thé” in elegant brass script, framed by neoclassical garlands and fine detailing along the sides. Inside, a polished veneered panel with string inlay and the original divider reflect the refinement of early 19th-century French craftsmanship. Remarkably, this caddy retains its original key, a rare survival.

The piece shows minor age wear, including a small side imperfection and areas of missing brass trim, consistent with its age and use. These do not detract from its beauty or presence; rather, they underscore its authenticity and nearly 200 years of history.

A striking accent on a bookshelf, desk, or sideboard perfect for holding keepsakes, jewelry, or tea. Its dark wood, brass inlay, and balanced proportions make it ideal for pairing with Empire or early Restauration-era pieces, or to add contrast within a modern vignette.

Made during the Restauration period (1815–1830), when French design evolved from the monumental style of the Empire toward something more personal and lyrical. Dark woods and brass inlay remained, but the motifs softened floral garlands and refined script replaced imperial eagles and laurel wreaths. This piece reflects that transition beautifully: rooted in Empire symmetry, yet softened by delicate inlay and intimate scale.
