Antique French Art Nouveau Jardinière with Insert
Marked “Déposé 501” | Cast Metal with Original Gilt Interior | c. 1890–1910
10″ × 4½″ × 4¼″ | Insert: 4¾″ × 3″
Description:
A sinuous and richly detailed French Art Nouveau jardinière, cast in heavy silver toned metal with sculptural botanical forms that seem to grow and ripple across the surface. The asymmetrical handles, curling tendrils, and stylized buds reflect the influence of nature so central to the Art Nouveau movement, while the overall silhouette feels dynamic and alive like it was shaped by water or wind.
The base is stamped “Déposé 501,” indicating a registered design in France, likely produced by a decorative arts foundry around the turn of the 20th century. The casting is substantial and beautifully executed, with dramatic depth and well articulated motifs. The silver finish is darkened and mottled with age, giving the piece a poetic, moody presence.
Inside is the original metal liner, removable, with an oval form that fits snugly into the base. It was designed to hold fresh flowers, small plants, or even sweets, a functional decorative object from a time when ornament and utility were not mutually exclusive.
