19th Century Italian Atelier Scroll Drawing
Full Scale Column Design, Linen Backed, “Fusto Lampa Sarno” Inscription
c. 1820–1870 | 32" × 9.5" | Original Gilded Wood Scroll Rods

Description:
A rare and visually striking atelier scroll from the 19th century, this long, narrow drawing was used as a working design document in a decorative arts or architectural studio. Likely Italian in origin, the scroll features a full scale study of a classical column or torchère form, rendered in graphite with precise construction lines, ornamental detailing, and artisan notations throughout.

The design is mounted to a backing of fine linen, a technique often used in period workshops to preserve large format paper and allow for repeated reference and handling. The entire piece is presented in its original scroll mounted format, with painted and gilded wood rods at the top and bottom, a rare survival that speaks to the document's utilitarian function and long life in the studio.

Written thrice in the hand of the artisan is the inscription:
“Fusto Lampa Sarno”, likely referencing the object ("fusto" meaning shaft or column body, "lampa" possibly short for lampadario or torchère) and place of origin (Sarno, a historic Italian town known for stone and decorative arts work).
