18th-Century French Engraving - Vertumne et Pomone
Paris, circa 1770–1790
Later 20th-century frame and presentation

11 x 13.25"

Description
Original French copperplate engraving depicting Vertumne et Pomone, the classical myth of the Roman god of the seasons revealing himself to Pomona, goddess of fruit trees and gardens. The intimate pastoral scene is rendered with fine burin engraving, dense cross-hatching, and soft tonal gradation characteristic of late 18th-century French academic printmaking.

The title and explanatory caption are printed beneath the image, along with the original Paris publication line, confirming its production and sale during the ancien régime period.

Engraving details (as printed)
VERTUMNE et POMONE.
Vertumne quitte son déguisement, reprend sa forme ordinaire
et paroît aux yeux de Pomone.

Publication line:
A Paris, chez l’Auteur, rue et Porte St Jacq., chez M. Ogier, Apothicaire.

Date & attribution
Based on the publication wording (“chez l’Auteur”), address format, period orthography (“paroît”), engraving technique, and distribution model, this print dates securely to the late 18th century, circa 1770–1790. The hybrid sales credit, including an apothecary, is characteristic of pre-Revolutionary Paris print circulation.

Presentation & provenance
Presented in a giltwood frame with layered matting and backing dating to the 20th century. The reverse bears a label from Galerie Laurent Jamault, Versailles, indicating later French gallery handling and resale. The engraving itself remains an authentic 18th-century impression.

Condition
Very good antique condition. Expected age-related toning to the paper, consistent with 18th-century printing. No observed tears or losses. Frame shows light wear and patina appropriate to age and use.

Styling notes
A refined and quietly romantic work that layers beautifully into both traditional and contemporary interiors. Particularly striking against plaster, stone, or darker painted walls, where the soft tonal engraving and gilt frame provide warmth without excess.
