Paris, circa 1760–1785
Original wavy antique glass; later giltwood frame
Overall (framed): 17 × 15.75 inches
Description
Original French engraved print depicting a tender domestic scene centered on a child, framed within an oval cartouche adorned with floral garlands. The composition reflects the late 18th-century French fascination with sentiment, family life, and childhood, rendered with refined linear detail and carefully modeled tonal depth characteristic of pre-Revolutionary Parisian printmaking.
The engraving is executed with dense, controlled line work typical of metal-plate engraving of the period and demonstrates the academic finish expected of works produced after painted compositions by established French artists.
Engraving details
The plate is inscribed beneath the image with its original title, along with artist and engraver credits and a Paris publication line, all consistent with late 18th-century French engraving conventions.
Date & attribution
Based on engraving technique, compositional format, typography, and subject matter, this work dates to the late 18th century, circa 1760–1785. The sentimental genre scene and oval presentation place it firmly within the Enlightenment-era tradition of French engraved prints.
