The red chalk is rubbed with a stump into continuous tone through the back and the thighs, and the white is laid only along the lighted edges. Sold as found.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe frame is gilt with a beaded inner edge, with a cream mat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHistorical Context\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSanguine is a natural red earth containing iron oxide, cut into sticks and used dry. It came into French practice from Italy in the sixteenth century and held its place in academic training for four hundred years, valued because its warm tone reads as flesh without any other color being added.
