The forms are laid in flatly and read as clear shapes with defined edges, which is what the weaver needed in order to match them thread by thread. The frame is carved giltwood, over two and a half inches deep, with acanthus leaf carving on the outer band and a running gadrooned inner band. Frame and cartoon were sourced separately and paired, then professionally framed with archival materials.

Corner cracking and gilt wear at the joins, sold as found.

Historical Context
A tapestry began as a modèle, a small scale painting made so the client could judge the effect before committing. Once approved, specialist painters known as peintres cartonniers copied it up to full size onto a carton, translating the colors as they went into the narrower range the dye house actually stocked, since every additional shade meant another bobbin at the loom and a slower, costlier weaving. The carton was then placed under the warp and the weaver worked straight from it. Cartons were creased, folded and folded again, and as each one wore out it was thrown away and a fresh one painted for the next commission. That was their whole intended life, workshop equipment used until it failed. The ones that survive came out of the Aubusson manufactures as they closed through the 1980s, gathered up by dealers and restorers who recognized them as paintings and had them laid down on canvas to hold them together.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0637/7645/6870/files/0478CEC8-0A30-4648-9F77-E7C0627AB884.jpg?v=1788047390
https://foundresse.com/products/antique-french-painted-tapestry-cartoon-roses-in-a-carved-giltwood-frame
